CEC 2006 - San Francisco

I was lucky enough to be chosen to attend work's Customer Engineering Conference in San Francisco in October 2006.

Moscone Centre
CEC 2006 was held at the Moscone Centre in San Francisco. Conveniently, it was only 2 blocks from my hotel.

Old Building
An old building, just like you see on TV. I like how this old looking building is stuck between two modern buildings.
-

Bay Bridge (1)
Bay Bridge is definitely the better looking of the two big bridges in San Francisco.

The Embarcadero
A view down The Embarcadero, the road/tram way that runs past the piers. This is down near piers 1 and 2.

Odd Top
Now how's that for thinking about things other people don't. I've never seen a pitched roof on a tall building. As you can guess, this is near 200 Kearny Road/Street.

Larger
Burbury (1)
It looks like quite a posh shop. Who'd have thunk the chavs would fall for something like Burbury.
-
Larger
Hill With a Hole
I think people got tired of going over this hill, so they made a hole through it. That's right, there is a road that goes over the hill, and one that goes under it - literally.

Union Square Statue (1)
The statue in Union Square. Quite a cool shot with the Stars and Stripes in the background.
-
Larger
Powell Street (1)
The tram station at the bottom of Powell Street is probably the most photographed tram turn table ever. This is where all the tourists flock, as it's probably the best place to start your tour on a tram. It's where I started mine.
-
Larger
Powell Street (3)
Everytime I went past the end of Powell Street, there was always a tram in this position. You'll see this in many of the pics I've taken of this end of Powell Street.

The Apple Store
I found the Apple Store. It didn't take long as my hotel was less than 2 mins walk away.

USA Line
Huh? I thought it was the USA on BOTH sides of the line. Maybe only the manhole cover is in the USA - it is the only place in the world that has steaming manhole covers.

Union Square Statue (2)
The polarising filter really makes this shot look awesome. The blues are so, blue.
-
Larger
Union Square from Macy's (1)
Typical tourist. I only really visted this part of Macy's for the view (it is the lady's department).
-
Larger
Hal Stern the Snowman (1)
Hal Stern showed up for one of the general sessions as a snowman. Apparently he's known as the snowman. Must be an inside joke or something.

Dilbert, the Snowman and a Wizard (1)
I really have no idea why these guys were dressed up for this presentation.

Jonathan Schwartz (1)
My boss. Finally, we had a CEO of a techie company, that actually is/was, and looks like a techie.

Powell Street (5)
This time I'm the one in the tourist queue. About to jump on the tram heading to Fisherman's Wharf.

The End of the Line
This is the end of the Powell/Market to Fisherman's Wharf tram line. It's still 3 more blocks to Fisherman's Wharf though.
-
Larger
Seagull
It's nice to see the seagulls in the US are just as big as back in the UK. This one would probably eat your cat if you're not careful.
-
Larger
The Transamerica Pyramid (1)
You can see this tower for miles all the way around the bay side of San Francisco.
-
Larger
Lombard Street (1)
The crookedest road in San Fran and maybe even the world - up there at the top. I made Neil trek this hill so I could get a closer look and take some more pcs.
-
Larger
Lombard Street (2)
I told you it was crooked. 8 sharp bends in less than 200m (as the crow flies). You may recognised this road from GTA too. Actually, you'll recognise a lot of San Fran in GTA San Andreas.
-
Larger
Lombard Street (9)
The bottom of the crooked bit is on the corner of Leavenworth and Lombard, just in case you wanted to know.

An Old Porsche 911
Hmmm, me thinks this one visits the garage a bit - to ensure it's breaks are still in perfect working order. If you're interested, yes, he did stop, without any problems.

Train vs Pedestrian
I had to take a picture of this. No one would believe me if I didn't. Don't you just love the way sad situations can be reported. Oh, and by the way, the pedestrian lost (deliberately).

The Blue Angels happened to be doing a bit of practising over the bay on the day we went to Alcatraz.

Taken from the boat that takes you to the island. It conveniently takes the long way round so you can get a good look around the island.

Welcome to Alcatraz
What a greeting. You encounter this just after you get off the boat. The red paint is from when the island was occupied by the "Indians of All Tribes" in 1969.

Well, apparently. There is no documentation detailing exactly which was his cell.

Gun Gallery
Looks like some keys on a string to me. These's a corridor behind the bars from where an armed guard would patrol. He was also responsible for lowering the keys to the guards below.

Picture in the Dining Room
Just in case you didn't know what you were missing - a nice picutre of San Francisco for the inmates to enjoy whilst tucking into some gruel.
-

Prison Break (1)
Several prisoners managed to escape from their cells by digging a hole in the wall, just like on Prison Break on TV.
-

Prison Break (3)
The prisoners even took the time to create dummy heads for their beds, with real hair and all.

Operating Theatre (1)
We were lucky enough to be part of a small select group who got to tour the hospital part of the Alcatraz. This wasn't open to the general public at the time we went.

This is the room, including the bath tubs, made famous in the film "Escape from Alcatraz".

The Recreation Yard (1)
I took the previous shots, and the next shot, right from this position. The later shots without any parts of fence in them were taken from the door on the otherside of the yard that you can see in this picture.

Golden Gate Bridge (1)
Unfortunately the weather was really grotty when we went to take pics of Golden Gate Bridge, so these are quite bad.

We were short of time, so we had to drive across the bridge. Apparently it's pretty awesome cycling across the bridge. I'll have to do this next time I go.

I've never seen Newcastle Brown Ale on tap in the UK, but here I find it across the pond.

Carmel (1)
Carmel-by-the-Sea is a surreal town. It's a small little town south of San Francisco, that looks like a scene from a movie. Everything is very surreal and really should be on a TV set.

Carmel (3)
Can you guess the country? It seems the all the buildings in Carmel seem to take some inspiration from all sort of different European countries.

Ford Pickup Truck
This truck is in immaculate condition. Other than the model and number plate, you'd never guess this was from 1941.

Hog's Breath Inn Sign
The Hog's Breath Inn is the ub Clint Eastwood used to own. Carmel is Clint Eastwood country, and he even has a ranch down the road. We had a fantastic meal there too.

The Hog's Breath Inn (1)
The outside seating area of the Hog's Breath Inn. I really liked this pub. It really uses this little hidden corner very well.
